  • If you've ever walked into the Junction Fair in Newcastle, you may have noticed the Honest Paper shop. A magical looking store full of beautiful pieces of stationary and paper goods that will give you the overwhelming urge to want to take up arts and crafts. The two wonderful ladies behind this darling boutique are Gabi Graham and Bella Cauchi, who turned their love for all things paper and pretty into their dream career. As well as stocking and creating their own cards, papers and tags with their brand 'Blessing & Honour', the store also stocks so many other wonderful creations from some beautiful Australian brands and artists including, Fox & Fallow, Inky Co, Write To Me, Apothecary Artists, Lauren Merrick and more! With Bella currently away on maternity leave as a first time mum (big congratulations!), I had a chat with Gabi about their paper wonderland.

For those who might not know, tell us what Honest Paper is all about?/ How did the idea for Honest Paper come about?

Honest Paper is a ‘one-of-it’s-kind’ specialty stationery shop, located in the Junction Fair, Newcastle. We stock a curated range of paper goods, from gift wrap and greeting cards through to art and journals (and everything ‘paper’ in between).

Both Bella & I have always had a personal affection for things paper and stationery, but the dream began with a literal day dream. One day sitting at my desk job that, of my current job, what I truly loved was creating 'printed pieces'. From there the mind began to run wild; what about creating not printed material that ‘sells' products but what about printed cards that actually inspired courage, thanks and kindness? So, I texted Bella, and in true Bella style she said ‘Why not? Lets do it!’.

What are your backgrounds? What made you want to get into stationary?

Both Bella & I have 'done our time' in the corporate world, working nine-to-five desk jobs, all the while in the background pursuing graphic design as our (much needed) creative outlets. It was Christmas of 2014 when the paper dream began with us launching our own stationery label ‘Blessing & Honour’. What started basically overnight as a ‘holiday project’ saw both of us, along with our ‘handy husbands', wrangling together a stall and piecing together a handful of unique Christmas greeting card designs. During the Christmas markets we had such an overwhelming response to our designs, saying that they were unique and refreshingly sincere, that we decided to continue throughout the year and see where it would take us. In late 2015 we had the opportunity to open a seven days a week, bricks and mortar shop - the absolute dream!

What inspires you when putting together your own work and when picking pieces for the shop?

Our designs have been born out of our personal belief in the significance of words & the art of encouragement. In this day and age there is a thousand ways you can say something, like happy birthday for example. You could text it, Facebook, say it in person etc, or you could write a card! We believe there’s something different about writing a card. Putting pen to paper makes you stop and think for a moment, dig a little deeper and when you let it, writing brings out the sincere, honest heart in us all.

Tell us about the space where you do most of your work? Is there anything in this space which helps give you inspiration or motivation?

The shop front currently doubles as our ‘creative studio', which naturally makes for a very creative space. One thing both Bella & I value in our shop & home space is art & simplicity. Surrounding yourself with something that exists for the sake of beauty you cannot help but be inspired & spurred in creativity. Simplicity comes from natural light and open clean spaces which makes for a clear mind, the perfect canvas for something fresh. Also, living plants and having greenery everywhere; natures art!

How would you define creativity? Do you think creativity is something all of us are born with or is it something we learn?

Creativity is something we all are capable of, it comes down to whether we choose to rise in ourselves, to seek something new and 'be a creator' - the ones that aren't content 'following trend’. It’s interesting though, I think the ‘creative type’ in itself is a trend now (laughs). I think there’s a definite difference between being ‘inspired' by another's move of creativity and ‘copying' it. The design world is always shifting and changing, and for us it’s about having the courage to see above and over the current trends and get in first, and create something fresh.

What puts you in a creative mood?

Real adventure! Sometimes creativity comes easy, there’s a need for a design and it seems to almost create itself! Other times, not so much. When the creative wave is hard to catch I find going someplace new, somewhere I’ve never been before, puts a whole new spin on things and refreshes my mind. Social media is a powerful tool of connection and creativity, and for the most part I love it! But you know what they say, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. As a designer I find that switching off to the 'content storm' of social media for even a few hours can refresh the mind enough to see something new.

If you had to start over, do you think you would have chosen a different career path or done Honest Paper differently?

Nope! Both Bella & I are known in our circles for 'biting off more than we can chew’. Some would say that’s a not so good trait, but honestly thats the season we’re both in and we love it. Last year I got married and Bella welcomed her first little one into the world, AND we opened a shop! Yes, some days should be slow & simple (and we absolutely make room for those days within the beautiful chaos) but for the most part we would rather say, 'we had a dream and had the courage to bring it to life', rather than to say we had a dream and chose the simple life instead. The joy we’ve found in taking courage to do what we love rather than to settle has far out weighed the difficulties and trials.

What’s been an opposition you’ve faced, how do you overcome it and what did it help teach you?

Our creative process is different to many other brands in that each piece we create is a collaboration of both Bella & I, and working with two creative minds can be challenging, you know the type. For Bella & I, we have worked closely together on the marketing for big events, albums releases, big and small business, etc, for years, before ‘Blessing & Honour’ began. Creating together, we constantly have what we call these ‘peanut butter and jelly’ moments, where one of us begins a design and then the other see’s something totally perfect that completes it far better than either of us originally saw possible, just like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Working as a partnership comes with it’s challenges too, there are moments when you have to choose to lay down your own stubbornness and be willing to see from two sides, play to your strengths and just be honest with each other.

What’s your biggest accomplishment to date?

It simply amazes us the community of fellow stationery lovers that frequent our store week after week, returning again for more Honest Paper! Our biggest accomplishment so far is 2016, the year we mustered up the courage to open a bricks & mortar store, took the leap into small business and left behind the safety of ‘employment'. Coincidently, 2016 is also the year I married my love Ben, and Bella & Michael welcomed their first child into the world. 'Business wise' 2016 was huge for us - the foundational year, and ‘life wise’- big and beautiful. Not to mention in March of this year we celebrated our first birthday!

Any future plans for Honest Paper?

The future is bright! Our Flagship store in the Junction is home and there is possibilities of expansion on the horizon! Newcastle is a greenhouse of creativity that lives & breathes small business, and while we would never put a lid on the future possibilities that may arise, Newcastle is home for us and our Honest Paper.

I picked up this book from the shelves of the store and tapped my card (it doesn't seem appropriate or relevant to say I swiped my card anymore) thinking that this was going to be a good book. Some might think that this means I came into it with a bias; maybe; or maybe I actually just came into it with a really high expectation which meant it was going to have to be really, really, really good to make me give it a thumbs up and a recommendation.

The book is called first, we make the beast beautiful and it's written by Sarah Wilson, which most people probably know as the lady who famously wrote the I Quit Sugar books. This book however has nothing to do with healthy lifestyle and good looking food, instead it tells a story about Sarah's battle with anxitey. I heard about this book after it seemed every news outlet was suddenly doing stories on the seemingly large amount of people we have in Australia suffering from the condition, and Sarah and her book where coming up on every single one of them; I was sold and I needed to read.

So to put it in a nutshell, I LOVED this book. If you have ever suffered from anxiety, depression, stress, or are looking to understand any of those better and learn about them in a way where you won't just have people throwing stats and wacky terms at you, this is the book for you.

Sarah Wilson explains her feelings and emotions and tells her stories and battles so well. You feel like you're having a conversation with her, expect obviously one where she's just doing all the talking and you're listening, but you highly enjoy it.

I think, no matter what life expereince or understanding you are coming to this book with, you will walk away with something; whether you've learnt something new or understood something better.

It's one of those books that you keep on your bookshelf and you come back to whenever you start experieicning tough moments in life, almost like that best friend you turn to for a chat when things starting getting a bit to rough.

I don't really want to give anything away about what Sarah talks about in these pages, because I think it's such a beautiful read to go to with no real knowledge of excatly what you're getting into, but I can guarantee if any of the above illnesses I mentioned interest you or personally affect you or someone who know, you will find this book a brilliant read.

The year of 2017 may not even be halfway done yet, but I think it's safe to say that this year has been the year of advocating for self-care. It seems that, as 2016 was a year of hardships and less than positive experiences for a lot of people, people decided to purposefully make 2017 a hell of a lot better, and for most, the first step in that direction was taking care and time for themselves. Peony Parcel is a subscription box that can help you with that. Every second month they send out a beautiful box of treats for the most important person in your life, you. With everything from stationary, candles, treats and beauty and bath products, there will always be plenty of goodies that will make you want to catch some me-time, or pass on that feeling to someone special by gifting them a box. The lovely people from Peony Parcel sent me their latest March subscription box; the Revitalise Edition, and I'm here to give you a little sticky beak inside.

Sal Remedia - Daily Grind Body Scrub
If you like to start your afternoon of pampering with either a nice, warm shower or a nice, hot bath, then Sal Remedia's Daily Grind Body Scrub might be the first thing from this box that catches your fancy. If you're a coffee-lover than you'll love this coffee scented scrub, and I mean it smells exactly like beautifully, roasting caffeine beans.

The Tea Nomad - Shanghai Tea Test Tube
Nothing is more relaxing and screams me-time more than a nice, hot cup of tea. This month's Peony Parcel has that sorted with the inclusion of the Shanghai Tea Test Tube from The Team Nomad. A combination of white tea, osmanthus and chrysanthemum flowers, rose petal and lychee essence, just brew 1 - 2 teaspoons of this wonderful concoction and you'll be feeling more relaxed in no time.

    Popped - Sweet Popcorn Treat
After you've had that cup of tea and have settled down on the couch to watch a movie on Netflix or catch up on your favourite guilty pleasure TV show, why not grab yourself some popcorn. This Hopscotch Caramel flavoured popcorn from Popped will hit that sweet spot while filling that popcorn-shaped hole in your heart. This was the first thing I cracked open after delving into the box and I can tell you it's damn good stuff.

    Luma Cosmetics - Sheer Lipstick
Sometimes taking care of yourself means letting yourself get glammed up and feeling pretty. Peony Parcel even has something this month to help with that thanks to the Luma Cosmetics Sheer Lipstick. Not only will this give your lips a bit of a natural looking tint, all the lovely ingredients will leave them feeling smooth and hydrated without feeling sticky.

Butt Naked Skinfood - Chai Lip Scrub
Nothing screams winter more to me than Chai, and now not only can you drink the wonderful stuff, you can also give some to your lips while leaving them feeling silky smooth. Before you pop on that Luma Lipstick, give this a little go first so there's not dry skin for that lipstick to cling to and ruin your perfect look. Best of all this stuff is vegan and organic.

The Mask Force - Supergirl Mask
Last but not least, a pampering session wouldn't be complete without some kind of face mask, so of course Peony Parcel have thrown one of those in as well. This mask in particular from The Mask Force ,is full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help give your complexion aradiantt glow.

That bi-annual time of the year is here again where Priceline roll out their famous 40% off cosmetics sale for two days. Last year I went both times and picked up some quality stuff, but this time around I have to get real with myself about the fact that I already have more than enough makeup than any one person really needs, and therefore I don't need to go. This doesn't mean though that I can't casually browse through the online portion of the sale and live vicariously through that. I also figured, considering that you still have time today to go out and grab yourself a bargain, I'd share some of the bits I probably pick up if I was going.

I can't deny that I get super excited whenever I get the chance to try new products. Recently, when I was doing my makeup, I realised I had almost a full face of new products to try from GENIE Beauty and Platinum Beauty, so I wanted to share my thoughts on them with you guys.

To start off my face I applied the Instant Line Smoother from Genie. This primer has a nice consistency, not to thick and not to runny, and it sunk quickly and easily into my skin while not leaving me feeling oily or with any sort of residue on my face. Next I used the Nutratanicals Antioxidant Foundation from Genie. I'm not really a powder foundation user, I've always been a bit sceptical of them, but I was intrigued and determined to give this a go. I applied this using Genie's Kabuki Brush, which I found really soft and smooth to use. For me, using powder was a weird experience, as it doesn't show up on your skin as much straight away compared to using a liquid foundation, it's something that you really need to build, but means that it's perfect to give you either a more natural, light coverage for days out, or something heavier for heading out at night. I found their lightest shade matched me quite well for when I wasn't tanned, and I dusted a little of a darker shade just to give me a bit of colour and life. I followed with Genie's Line Smoothing Concealer, which I put under my eyes and on any little red blemishes I had. I found this concealer quite thick compared to what I'm use to working with, and I found it a bit tricky to blend, especially over the top of the powder. I think this type of concealer is best used before foundation to just cover redness, and a more fluid concealer should be used over the top to help brighten the eyes and any other areas of the face. The thickness of it however meant it did do a create job with coverage, and once I figure out the best way to use the product I think it'll be a great addition to my makeup collection.

To finish off my base I tested out Genie's Cashmere Powder. I used the Kabuki Brush again to pack some under my eyes to let them bake, and used the Platinum Powder Brush to dust some over the rest of my face. All the Platinum brushes are super, super soft and easy to work with, and they apply powder products beautifully, without leaving any sort of brush marks behind. The final new product I got to test out on my face was Genie's Cashmere Blushwhich I applied using the Platinum Blush Brush. The blush has great pigmentation, so a little goes a long way, and it's also super buildable for either a soft glow or something more dramatic, depending on your desired look.

Next up is eyes! I used my existing MUD Eyeshadow Palette, which I previously showed my love for here, to give a light and natural look on my lids using a combination of the Platinum Contour Eye BrushPlatinum Eye Shadow Brush and Platinum Base Blending Brush. As with the face brushes, these eye brushes were super soft and flawlessly blended out the shadows. Onto the lashes, I tested out Genie's Million Dollar Lash Kit, which contains as TLC Plus Lash Booster and TLC Plus Mascara. The lash booster is a white formula, which aims to initially help with the length of your lashes, and the white colour helps bring out the black of the mascara. Using the two together I was really happy with the result. The formula of the mascara looked a bit clumpy to me, but it ended up giving me a full, yet somehow natural looking finish to my lashes. I also used it on my bottom lashes, which I usually only ever reserve for something that is waterproof to avoid my mascara falling and leaving me with panda eyes by the end of the day, however this stuff didn't budge at all which I super surprised and happy with.

Overall I have to say I was highly impressed with both brands, and will certainly be making them a part of my makeup routine from now on. Have you tried anything new lately?

    . 3/18/17 .

Most of us probably think of treating blemishes as something that we do once they've appeared on our face and ruined our lives. However, treatment should be viewed as a preventative thing more than a reactive thing. Having a good skin care routine, especially if you're a makeup wearer, can go a long way to making sure your face stays fairly blemish free. To help you get in the habit, Medik8 have a great little Blemish Starter Kit that has all the steps you need for a preventative skincare routine.

beta Cleanse - Exfoliating Foaming Cleanser
This cleanser aims to remove any dirt, oil, makeup and impurities from your skin without leaving it feeling dry. It aims to help unclog your pores while respecting your skin's natural oils and ensuring it doesn't strip them away. I'm not generally a massive foam cleanser fan, something about them to me leaves me feeling like it can't have really tackled any dirt or impurities on my skin that hard, I tend to prefer something with a bit more grit and that creates more of a soapy lather. For me, as someone who double cleanses, this is a product I would use for my second round of cleansing if I had a day were I didn't wear to much makeup, or would just use twice on my makeup free days. After using it either way I have to say my skin certainly feels clean afterwards, though, for a product that says it exfoliates, I can't feel any sort of small beads or anything in the product when I'm rubbing it onto my face. This stuff also has a quite citrusy scent, which I think may come form the tea tree oil, which I quite like.

    Hydr8 B5 - Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin B5 Serum
This serum aims to give your skin a big hydration boost while also re-establishing the natural hydro-balance in your skin which gives you texture, suppleness and luminosity. This stuff felt really nice to massage onto my skin and dried quite quickly. I'm such a fan of using serums in my skincare routine these days; I've noticed such a difference in the overall quality of skin since I've introduced them. This stuff can feel a little oily when you first apply, which I have to admit scared me thanks to my not so lovely history with oily skin, but it sunk into my skin really well and hasn't broken me out like some oily products can.

Retinol 3TR - Advanced Night Serum
This serum is an extra step for you to add in when you're doing your skincare routine at night, Popping this on before the Hydr8 B5, the serum aims to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and help to speed up the natural peeling process of dead skin cells. This one can also feel quite oily, like the Hydr8 B5, but just like that product also, it sinks into the skin really well without leaving any oily residue behind.

beta Moisturise - Skin Balancing Mattifying Moisturiser
I tend to use this stuff during the day to keep my oils at bay, and use a more specific night time moisturiser at night. You can feel it mattifying your skin as soon as you apply it, and it sinks quickly and easily into your skin. I certainly notice my skin looks less shiny throughout the day, with or without makeup, when I use a product like this. It aims to help keep your skin hydrated without clogging up your pores, while also having anti-inflammatory properties and encouraging cell regeneration and repair.
