  • The Essence: Bringing together men's fashion and funky local street art, the Nook Store perfectly captures the Novocastrian vibe.

The Facts: Newcastle males, if you're looking for a place to shop with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and exclusive threads, then look no further.

Located on a 'nook' in Hunter Street Mall, the independent men's fashion outlet was brought into existence in 2012 as a part of a Renew Newcastle project to help support emerging, local designers.

Since its opening the retro retail store has expanded its stock to include a range of Australian-made goods. From accessories and fashionable streetwear, some of which is produced by owner Brodie Bannerman’s own label, Once Undone, to the timeless hair products of UpperCut Deluxe. You can even grab yourself a skateboard to help you cruise around the rest of the mall.

This hub of creativity showcases more than just clothes, it also turns into a exhibition space for Newcastle artists to show off their work. Artist/designer Grizzle has hosted a series of his work in-store, and also has a range of merchandise and stickers available to snap up.

Whether you’re a designer looking for somewhere to display and sell your work, or simply roaming the streets looking for some fresh wardrobe pieces, put this joint on your list of places to check out.

The Find: Personalise any flat surface you own and support the in-store brands by walking to the front counter and picking up a four pack of funky stickers, and at only 4 dollars, who doesn’t stickers!

Back in 2014 I went on an exchange to Italy for two months. I'd signed myself up to do a fashion industry/communication-type course, but the main reason I jumped on board was to travel to Italy. It is definitely not the cheapest way to do it though let me tell you. Anyway, it was the first international trip I went on when I had my DSLR, so you can imagine I went nuts with the photo taking. I was looking and reminiscing on my snaps the other day and thought why not share them. I'm going to break them up into parts because there is so many, starting off with photos from the place I called home for the first two months of 2014 - Florence. Back then I had a bit of a thing for filters to and only have copies of those I edited, which also all unfortunately have this noiseinwonderland photography 'watermark' on them, but anyway - enjoy!

Girls tend to feel either one of two ways about doing their nails. Some love it and find it fun and relaxing, while the other half hate it and don't understand how anyone could have the patience for such a thing. I personally tend to love doing my nails, particularly during those times when by some miracle I've managed to get them to grow nice and long. I normally just paint them all one colour and get on my with my day, but sometimes it can be fun to do something a little different if you've got some spare time.

Something I recently tried out was this product called Jamberry. Basically they are do-it-yourself nail wraps that you can use on both your fingers and toes. With over 300 designs to choose from, I have to say my favourite was the green marble.

Personally I don't think I have enough patience for this type of product. Nothing against the product itself, it seems to be great quality, however I just didn't think it was for me. I'm pretty sure I didn't do it properly, but once I managed to get the sticker covering my nail, I found the edges keep pulling up (which sucks a lot, particularly when you're washing your hair in the shower). In saying this, I wouldn't say steer clear of the product, I think it's one of those things you need to try and decide for yourself. Me personally, I think if I want cool nail designs I'll stick to those packets of glue on nails.

*this product sample was sent to me for free, however the opinions are completely my own

So, I've got another new series I'm hoping to keep up with on my blog - it's going to be called Instagram rewind (if you're not already you should go follow me over there)! Basically every month I'll take a look back at what I uploaded and see what memories it brings up. I know this one is pretty late, but when I ran out of photo paper I wasn't keen on running down to my local shop and spending $20 on a pack, so I had to wait for the cheap eBay stuff to arise (so worth the savings though). As you can see my love for my typewriter is still going strong and I had another book with half it's pages missing (like I talked about in my previous post), so I got my DIY brain on and made up this little scrapbook type deal that I'll be able to hang on to as a keepsake.

My new year started off down the coast. I spent New Years Eve and the three following days at a big house in the Central Coast suburb of Wamberal, drinking, chilling at the beach and just generally hanging around. It was a nice, relaxing and different way to bring in the New Year.

This month I started writing for Hijacked, so there's another one to add to the resume, and I also kept on blogging.
The next adventure came in the form of a trip to Inverell. I explained what this was all about in my previous photo diary post.
Before long I was headed off to Wingham with my boyfriend to hang out with his Dad for a few days. It was damn hot, but it made the trip to Potoroos falls sooooo worth it.
This past Australia Day I didn't actually have any plans, and I didn't actually mind. My boyfriend and I got ourselves stuck in a cleaning frenzy (yeah we're super cool) and managed to rearrange my studio and do a major overhaul of his kitchen. The day was finished off with a beautiful walk over at Stockton with his dog. I'd never actually been into Stockton before, and it was interesting seeing the city of Newcastle from the other side. I could hear the music pumping from the clubs as people partied away, and while normally I would feel anxiety rising inside of me about missing out, I actually found myself feeling really content.
Overall January was a pretty good month, and there isn't really anything I can complain about. Aside from life's general stresses every now and then, January treated me well. I managed to get out of the house and spend a few days away in different places, and spent plenty of time soaking up the sunshine down at the baths and beaches. With Uni now only just around the corner, it's going to be sad to say goodbye to all the free time (though let's be honest Uni can almost feel like a holiday sometimes anyway). It's time to smash out this last year!

How was your month of January? What did you get up to?
