  • I hope you had an amazing Christmas! Every year it never ceases to amaze me how much hype gets built up around Christmas coming, and then before we know it, it's over. So to try and bring back some Christmas spirit (let's be honest, that's not really going to happen), I thought I would share with you what I generously received as gifts this holiday period, as well as the things I brought during the Boxing Day sales with money and gift vouchers I received at Christmas. A quick disclaimer (as everyone does), none of this is to flaunt selfishly to the world all the stuff I was lucky enough to receive, I just enjoy reading and watching hauls and seeing what others received, and because it's something I enjoy I also wanted to do a post about it. If you happened to receive some cash moneys or vouchers for Christmas as well, and you're yet to head out and spend them, and you're not quite sure what to pick up, maybe this post can bring a little inspiration.

    Cotton On
Cotton On is one of those places that I feel can be hit or miss for me. Sometimes I go in and love a bunch of stuff I see, and other times I feel like it's just full of basic, uninspiring clothes. Their sales can sometimes be like that to, as they just seem to be getting rid of all their basics and those pieces that people don't want (and you can clearly see why). However this Boxing Day I feel like they nailed, and there were some awesome bargains up for grabs.
These shoes aren't something I would normally think to pick up. Usually when I put on this style of shoe I feel like they make my feet look extremely long, but something about this pattern made me not hate them so much.
I also grabbed this dress. I usually hate this style of dress. Because my body shape is fairly straight up and down, I tend to look like I'm drowning in it. I think it must be the stripes, because when I put this one (after sizing down) it didn't look so bad.

    Records
I actually got my first record player and record last Christmas, and have been slowly building up my collection since (and I mean really slowly). This Christmas/Boxing Day period I went a bit record nuts and brought/received the most amount of records I've ever gotten at once. I'm quite picky about what vinyl I buy. Firstly, they're not the cheapest thing going, and secondly, I don't really like the idea of having all the latest Top 40, pop albums on vinyl, it's almost like I feel the record player is to sacred for that. Instead I tend to pick classic albums and any recent ones that have really just hit me in the heartstrings (or something like that).
I'm a massive Nirvana fan, and seeing as one of my main goals in life is to own every Nirvana record available, this is no shocker. This one I picked out for my boyfriend to get me for Christmas, and I love it!
Ever since listening to Hozier's album, I've wanted to get it on record. It's this type of sound that I just love to hear coming out of the speakers while a vinyl spins.
Something a little different in genre than I would normally pick up on vinyl, but for some reason I just really loved Allday's album, and it was the first time I'd been in a store and actually physically seen a copy of this on vinyl, so I had to nab it.

    The Lair
Anyone in Newcastle knows what this is. My Mum was generous enough this year to buy me one of these iconic Lair bags, and I'm in love! I took it with me when I went Boxing Day shopping, and I just felt so trendy and on-point. I absolutely love the design of this bag and the fact it's handmade, locally. No words, just love!
My mum also got me this awesome pair of swimmers from The Lair, because it wouldn't be a normal Christmas if I didn't get a new pair.

    Glasshouse Candle
I have wanted one of these babies for years. Back in the day I use to call them Peter Alexander candles because around here that's the main place people buy them from, and because I'd never taken notice of the fact the brand is actually Glasshouse,  I just assumed Peter Alexander must have made them (so naive). I picked up what I feel is the classic scent, Vanilla Caramel, and I've been smiling ever since thanks to my studio now constantly smelling like it.

    Mimco
I use to always carry around a wallet, but recently I've switched to a cute clutch from Blackbird Corner. Ever since, my cards have just been thrown in there in a chaotic mess, and I'm always stuck standing at a checkout searching through my purse trying to find my card. So mum brought me a cardholder from Mimco, which is no surprise if you know us. It's simple and stylish, and I love it.

    Womanity Perfume
I'd never heard of or seen this brand before, but it smells lovely!

    PJs
Because basically I get a pair of these each year. Love, love love.

    Lovisa
This is hands-down my favourite jewellery store of all-time. Every time I go to the shops I have to physically restrain myself from going in there, especially because they tend to have awesome sales all the time, and Boxing Day was no different (expect I let myself wander free).

    Factorie
I've never been a major fan of this store because nothing in there tends to grab me, I find it's all very similar stuff to what other stores are selling, but I thought I'd have a browse anyway. I didn't feel there was a lot on sale, and even less that grabbed me, but I did pick up these basic, staple pair of jean leggings. I have been wanting these in a grey colour for ages, and with $10 off I just felt, why not?!

    Typo
Because anyone who knows me knows how obsessed I am with this store, so of course I was going to go in. I grabbed a bunch of stuff from there when I went shopping after my birthday, so I wasn't planning on really picking up much this time round, so I only got the one thing. I've had my eye on this book for ages. Basically everyday you have a new question you answer, and the book runs for three years. Each year you can look back on what you wrote in reply to that day's question, which I think is pretty awesome, and is a great way to reminisce and reflect on how much has changed.
Another thing I got from there, as a gift from the boyfriend (I also brought him one because we both loved them) was a shower speaker. I've actually wanted to grab one of these for a while. It's even harder to leave the shower in the morning now.

    Kmart
Of course! Kmart is a great place to pick up some cheap, stable pieces for any part of your life, and that's exactly what I did, for my wardrobe.

Welcome to part three of my series of function basic photography posts. This blog is going to deal with the third and final main pillar you should understand to help you take some awesome photos. So lets jump in.

Shutter speed, sometimes also called exposure time, is basically the length of time the shutter on your camera is open.

The shutter on a camera acts like a type of curtain that sits in front of the sensor on your lens. This curtain stays closed until you hit the shutter button on your camera to take a picture. When you do, the curtain opens up, lets in light for the sensor to collect, and then closes.

Shutter speed is measured in seconds or fractions of a second. So a shutter speed of 1/4 is a quarter of a second, while a shutter speed of 1/250 is two hundred and fiftieth of a second or four milliseconds.

The average modern day DSLR will generally be able to go up to around 1/4000th of a second, though some higher end DSLR's can sometimes reach 1/8000th of a second. In cases where you're using an external remote trigger, you could possibly even use slower shutter speeds than this. The shutter speed settings on your camera typically double with each setting (1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8).

Shutter speed is mainly important when you're dealing with moving objects, because depending on the shutter speed you pick, the moving object will either be blurred (motion blur) or seem frozen in time.

If you set your camera on a faster shutter speed, than you will be able to make objects in motion freeze. At a slower shutter speed, motion blur will occur. Generally, the option that you would call the slowest shutter speed on your camera is the slowest one you can use without introducing camera shake. These days some lens have 'vibration reduction' technologies built into them, which allows you to use slower shutter speeds while actually holding your camera and not having any camera shake. If you have a tripod handy then you can usually use shutter speeds that are above 1 second, and this can produce some pretty cool shots.

Motion blur may sound like something you want to avoid, but in some situations it can create interesting, artistic effects. For example, when you're out taking pictures of waterfalls you may choose a lower shutter speed. This will blur the water to show it is moving, while keeping everything else around it in focus. You'll notice that motion blur also tends to be used in advertisements for cars and other vehicles where the wheels of the vehicle might be blurred to convey speed.

If you're looking to freeze moving objects, generally if you set your shutter speed to 1/500th of a second or above, that will do the trick. If however you're shooting something that is particularly fast, such as a bird, or you really want to capture every little detail, you may need to bump it up to 1/1000th of a second or more.

As with all the other functions, shutter speed is really something you need to play with and figure out once you've got your subject in front of you, but those are some ball park figures to start working with.

Another month, another bunch of songs that I've been playing on repeat. Click on the image below to see what tracks I've been pumping in the month of December. No, there is not any Christmas carols on this list because unless it's my family playing them on Christmas day, or every shop in the world playing them to death, I don't really listen to them.

    TRACK LIST
A Head Full of Dreams - Coldplay
    Me, Myself & I (feat. Bebe Rexha) - G-Eazy

    . 12/17/15 .

I'm not usually one to say that the year has gone quick, but I'm going to break that trend in 2015 and say, man did this year fly!

I think it's good practice as a year draws to a close, to sit down and think about everything you have accomplished during the past twelve months. The ups, the downs, the exciting and the not-so-great times. It's good to take a moment to realise what you've learnt from the past year of your life and how this could help you in the one to come. So rather than doing this internally, this year I want to share my thoughts to my friends of the Internet and take a look at both what I've done, and things I hope to accomplish in the year to come (I'm a poet and I didn't even know it). I don't want to call them a list of New Years Resolutions because some aren't about change, but more just goals I hope to kick in 2016.

    MOVING OUT
This year I took that first step that comes at some point in everyone's life and moved out of my parent's home. The main reason was so I could live in Newcastle because I was already travelling 40 minutes to get there almost every single day of the week, so it just made sense. In moving out, I managed to force myself to step outside my comfort zone and move in with two girls I didn't know. When I made the decision to move out, I also made the conscious decision that I had to move in with other people I didn't know. I have a quiet and shy personality when meeting people for the first time, and I wanted to challenge myself and try and get over this fear or anxiety I have of meeting new people. The two girls I moved in with were absolutely lovely, I think I got really lucky to find them as housemates, and I loved the place I moved in to. As much as I love my parent's home and somewhat miss it when I go back to visit, I know that choosing to move out to Newcastle was a really good decision. I moved out at the start of February, so it was a great way to start off the new year with something new, fresh and challenging.

    LIVING ALONE
After living with the girls for six months, it was time to move again. I eventually decided I wanted to give living by myself a crack. I'm an only child, so I'm use to spending time with myself during the day and having my own, uninterrupted space, so I knew living alone wouldn't bother or scare me, in fact I was pretty certain I would love it. I can now say for certain that I do. I ended up finding a studio unit to live in and it's my pride and joy. I can keep it as clean or as messy as I want without bothering anyone and I can be my weird self without anyone noticing. Most nights are either spent with my boyfriend at my place or me at my boyfriend's, so that probably helps ensure I don't get lonely, but during the day I love having my own space to create or do whatever it is I want to do.

    LEARNING MANUAL
During this year my first car got written off in a car accident. It was a little sad to see my black Peugeot convertible go, but I also knew exactly what car I wanted next, a fluro yellow Suzuki Swift Sport. Armed with the money from my write off, I went on the hunt for some second-hand models. I quickly noticed that if I was going to get one, I was going to have to learn and buy a manual. I had always meant to learn manual, I thought it was just something that would be good to know, but with my previous car being automatic, and my boyfriend's car being automatic, there just wasn't really that push to learn. When a yellow Swift popped up for sale in Newcastle, I knew I was going to have to pounce on it (because those babies are tough to find unless you travel to Sydney, which I was willing to do). I also realised I would have to learn manual. It's been a few months since I got my car and manual doesn't trouble me at all anymore, in fact I feel weird jumping in an automatic, I don't know what to do with myself. I'm glad I was also to cross this one off my to-do list this year, and now I get to zoom around in my fluro yellow baby, so much joy!

ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE END
This year marked the end of my fourth year at University finishing off my law degree. Next year is my final year at uni. Obviously each year at Uni is one step closer to the end, but when you know the year ahead of you is all that's left, it seems like a more important and bigger step. Personally, I'm kind of excited to finish Uni because I have some plans for the year after (see below) and law isn't really my thing. I'm also excited to be able to say I did it! I survived! I have a law degree! Because even if you're not particularly using it, it's kind of cool to say. I will however miss my friends and knowing I will probably see them everyday. For years we all knew what basically the next would hold, but once 2016 waves goodbye anything could happen. People could move away or become really busy with full-time jobs in the city, who knows. I feel our group is strong enough to still stay in touch though, even if it is just through our Facebook chat.

    SELF-EMPLOYMENT
Technically this did start at the end of 2014, but it really came into full swing by the end of January this year when I was working two freelance writing jobs. I never really loved working before with my previous casual jobs, but I finally found myself loving my work. I mean I was getting to write and take photos for my job, how could I not love it. I got to go out into Newcastle every week and meet new people and discover new places, and when I wasn't out, I was able to sit at home and do what I had to do. No going to an office and sitting inside day after day or putting on some silly uniform. I still don't know if I've got all the financial and business side of things worked out completely, but I can confidently say that I found what I want to do with my life - be self-employed and freelance. I don't think I could ever go back to a normal job again.

    TURNING 22
Sure, we have birthdays every year, and turning 22 in Australia doesn't really have any particular meaning (expect now I can sing along to the Taylor Swift song and it makes sense). However, even though we have them every year, I still think a birthday is something to be cherished and seen as special. Whether you have some extravagant plans, or just chill out with friends and family, it is still a special day. This might just be me, but I find that during the day on my birthday, literally nothing can make me upset. I even had a law exam this year on my birthday and I didn't even care. It's like everything in the world has been painted with an extra coat of positivity and happiness, and I find myself walking around feeling upbeat and jolly all day. True, we should really be trying to do this every day of our lives, but I find it comes a lot easier on my birthday, don't you?.

    LOSING WORK
Not only did I start finding freelance jobs, I also starting losing them, which is inevitable in the freelance world. None of the losses where any of my fault, they all basically came down to the companies needing to save money, and the easiest things to cut off in those situations are the freelancers. I always knew the world of freelance wasn't stable, but because I'd managed to get these great jobs and they seemed to be running smoothly I think I kind of forgot about it. So, as sad and hard as it was to lose the jobs, they taught me valuable lessons and reminded me of the type of world I want to get in to. I still love freelancing though, even though anytime I get a job I know I could possibly lose it tomorrow with no prior warning. But you can't have everything, there is always a pay off, and in this case, flexible working hours and the opportunity to be at home more and spend more time outdoors and doing things you love means possibly not having a job tomorrow, but I can deal with that.

    RED BULL BILLY CART
I did a previous blog post on this, but this year my Dad and I got to take part in the Red Bull Billy Cart race in Sydney at Centennial Park. This is definitely a stand out moment of the year, mainly because it is just such a random event to take part in. I mean how often do you hear people around you talking about how they spent their weekend flying down the track in a professional billy cart race; not that this race looked anything remotely close to professional with all the crazy cart designs. It wasn't just the event though, getting to spend time with my Dad building a billy cart is also something you don't do every day, and I love being able to look back and say 'hey remember the time we did this, how random was that!'. If you ever have a once-in-a-lifetime event like this come your way, follow my advice and jump on it. I promise you'll have so much fun, it might even just make your year.

    MY PLANTS
This might seem like a really silly one to put in, but I am really proud of them and love looking at them each day. I would be referring to my plants here. I currently have a plant ladder that is housing a few babies, including my first ever cactus named Kevin (who instantly makes me happy every time I look at him, is that weird?). I have more room there to add plants, so I can't wait to grow my garden. I then have a big suitcase garden (watch out for a blog post on this soon!). In there I've got a few more succulents and leafy plants as well as three more cacti (Steve, Bob and Stewart - all named after minions from Despicable Me). The story behind finding the suitcase (which I'll mention in a blog post to come) is half the reason I love the garden so much, and it also just look so cool and unique. Also anything involving cacti just makes me happy. I'm surprised none of my babies have died yet, and I think my plant obsession will only grow in 2016. They're such a part of my life that I know whenever I move from now on there has to be a good place for growing plants or I ain't moving in.

    GROW THE NOISEINWONDERLAND
This year, obviously, I started this blog, The NoiseInWonderland. I've attempted to start blogs a few times, but I never really stuck with it because I never really knew what I wanted the purpose of them to be. This time however was different. I created this blog to share, not only random life things, but also my love of photography and to teach you guys bits and pieces as I learn them to. This blog and its photography content is essentially going to grow with me as I grow as a photographer, and I'm so excited for its journey in 2016. In the year ahead I would love to grow the audience of the website so I can start interacting more with people of the Internet and just start having conversations, whether they are about photography-related topics or anything else in between. I've really enjoyed creating content for this blog the past few months, especially as its given me a good reason to start picking up my camera and phone, and start taking photos again, and I hope you will continue to come along with me here in 2016.

    WORK IN PROGRESS
At the end of November/start of December this year I've finally starting working on a project that I've had floating around in my head for most of the year. Nothing really stopped me from starting it before except my own lack of motivation and just choosing to sit up and do it, but now I am! I know people hate when others say they are working on something and then give zero details away about it, but because it is still so fresh and really only sitting in the planning stages, I don't really want to talk about it to much. I'm honestly not sure how long it will take, especially once Uni starts back up next year, but the goal is to either have it done by the end of 2016, or be extremely close to being finished. I promise, once the project has some actual content to share, that I will put out details about it. It is photography based though, and something I am really passionate about and excited to finally start working on. Keep your eyes peeled!

    FINISH MY DEGREE
The end of 2016 will mean I have finished my Law degree, finally! As interesting as it has been, I still don't feel the area of law is for me as a career, so I am excited to finally finish it off. It really is because of my degree however that I meet most of my Uni friends and had so many opportunities and memorable social times, and I am really grateful for that. Even though it may not be a degree I particularly use in the real world, I believe I was still meant to do it so I could meet the people I did and do the things that I did over the past five years. Afterwards I do plan to have a sort of gap year, because I never had one after finishing high school. However during that year I do really want to do my Diploma of Photo Imaging online so I can really start to get some experience and qualifications behind me as a photographer.

    CONNECT WITH THOSE AROUND ME
When I was working my freelance jobs, like I said above, I was getting to spend time each week out in the Newcastle community, meeting people and finding new places. I knew I loved this, but honestly, it wasn't until it was taken away from me that I realised how much I enjoyed it (as the saying goes, you don't know what you've got until it's gone). Newcastle, despite looking fairly large, is actually quite a tight and well connected place. As I went out and meet more and more people, I started to find all these connections, and I loved that! With that freelance job gone, there was nothing pushing me to keep going out and talking to people and making connections myself, and so I kind of got lazy and didn't do it, so I think in 2016 I need to push myself more to do this on my own, and this is something everyone can do. I always heard things about getting involved in or getting to know your local community, and I didn't think it was necessary, but I find that doing so can make you feel really happy. You feel a part of something and feel valued. I don't know how exactly I'm going to start connecting with people again in 2016 , I just know that I should and will.

    BE HAPPIER & MORE POSITIVE
This is something I work on everyday, and something I want to keep working on in 2016. It's something we can all work on. This year however I tried my best to make more of an effort in this area. Anytime I found myself getting upset or angry at something, I tried to take a moment to step back and think, is this really worth being upset over, or is it time to let this go and move on? As humans it is impossible to not get upset, but it's about knowing how much time you should be letting yourself stew over whatever it is. A lot of the time, at least in my case, the things frustrating you are minor, unimportant things. I find that as soon as you take yourself out of that headspace and think is it worth feeling like this, you find it's not. Doing this helps you to get over whatever the issue is quicker, meaning you get to spend more of your time and life the only way you should, feeling happy. With more serious incidents, it can be good to spend a little extra time feeling those feels about it, but you have to know when it is time to let it go. You can't let yourself brew over things for to long. When you do, you stop being happy, and when you stop being happy, you stop noticing all the great little things in life and don't let yourself enjoy the moments that you really should.

Whatever you have planned for the Christmas holidays and New Years, I hope you have an amazing time, be safe, and get ready to kick ass in 2016.

What are your goals for 2016 or what is something you achieved in 2015 that you are extremely proud?

So I am trying to be a little more animal-friendly when it comes to my eating habits at home (blog post explaining further coming sometime soon). So recently when I really felt the craving for banana bread I thought, why not make it myself and why not make it vegan? Then I figured I could share it with you guys. This recipe is a combination of a few different ones that I found on the Internet and squished together myself. I promise it is tasty and really simple.

    Ingredients

    • 3 bananas
    • 225g self-raising flour
    • 2 tsp baking powder
    • 100g sugar
    • 75g veggie oil
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 3 tbsp water
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda

    Method

    • Preheat your oven to 180˚C.
    • Peel and place the three bananas into a big mixing bowl and mash them up with a fork.

    • Measure out and add in all the ingredients, mixing them as you go. Here I'd like to give a shout-out to a kind of sugar-alternative product I found in Woolworths last month - coconut sugar. We all know sugar, particularly the white kind, isn't the best for our bodies, so when I saw this product in-store I had to give it a go. Sure it's not the cheapest, but as I live by myself and really only ever put a small teaspoon into my tea each morning and a protein smoothie every other day, this stuff has been lasting me quite a while. What I love most is when you turn over the pack to read the ingredients there is only one thing listed; 'Certified Organic Coconut Sugar (100%)'. My body feels better just looking at the packet, which is also resealable and I think looks quite appealing, so I don't mind having it sitting around. FYI, nothing about this is sponsored or anything, I just love the stuff and really wanted to share.
    • Grab a baking tray and either line it with baking paper or give it a good spray with oil or grease with butter to prevent the bugger from sticking to it.
    • Place all your mixture into the baking tray.
    • Pop it in the oven for around 15 - 20 minutes. I find the best thing to do is just watch it and when you see the top start to turn golden brown, it's probably getting close to done. Some recipes I read said to leave the bread in for 40 minutes, but my oven gets super hot so I didn't have to bake mine for long.
    • Quick tip: if the top of the bread starts to turn brown but it hasn't quite cooked all the way through, pull it out and place some foil over the top to prevent it from burning while it finishes off baking.
    • Once down, grab it out and give it some time to cool.
    • And there you have it! A super simple, quick and vegan-friendly banana bread that I promise tastes just as good as anything you'll pick up from a store.

A few weeks back I started off this series of function basic photography posts by giving a simplified overview of aperture. This time around I want to take a look at ISO.

ISO is another one of the three most important features (the others being aperture and shutter speed) that a photographer needs to know to help them take awesome shots.

Basically ISO is the level of sensitivity your camera has to light, meaning it measures how sensitive the image sensor on your camera is to light. The image sensor is the part of your camera that essentially takes light and transforms it into an image.

Unlike with aperture, ISO doesn't work backwards. The lower the ISO number is, the less sensitive your camera will be to light. The higher the ISO number, the more sensitive it will be to light.

You will want to use a higher ISO setting when you're in a darker environment, such as a gig or some indoor event. This allows you to capture images in low-light situations without having to use a flash. Therefore a lower ISO works best in lighter environments.

A very important thing that needs to be noted however, is that, as you crank up the ISO, you will get more grain or 'noise' on your image. So where you can (in environments with plenty of light) keep your ISO number low.

However it may be possible for you to use a low ISO in a dark setting. If your camera is sitting on a tripod or some other flat surface that will keep it absolutely still, then you could try a low ISO. This just means it will take your camera a longer period of time to actually capture the image, so both the camera, and anything in the scene, cannot move during that time if you want to capture it in perfect detail. Anything that does move while your camera is trying to take the shot will be blurred or might look a bit like a ghost. In some cases this can create cool effects, so maybe try playing around with this.

The lowest ISO number your camera has is known as the 'Base ISO'. For most cameras this is usually between 100 - 200. From here the numbers tend to go in sequence like this: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 and 6400. Each time you increase the ISO number you are basically doubling how sensitive your camera is to light. So when your using ISO 200, your camera is two more times sensitive to light, at ISO 400 it is four times more sensitive, at ISO 1600 it is sixteen times more sensitive, and so on.

Now apart from helping you take pictures in darker settings without a flash, what else does changing the ISO do for you?

Well, it will also help you take images of fast moving objects, because the higher your ISO, the less time your camera needs to capture what is in front of it. For example, when the camera is set at ISO 1600, this means your camera can capture an image in 1/16 of a second. As the ISO gets higher, the amount of motion blur in your image is reduced and a moving object can essentially be frozen in time, which allows you get capture more details of the object.

    ISO 100 = 1 second
    ISO 200 = 1/2 second
    ISO 400 = 1/4 second
    ISO 800 = 1/8 second
    ISO 1600 = 1/16 second
    ISO 3200 = 1/32 second

A great feature on many new cameras these days is called 'Auto ISO'. The name is pretty self-explanatory, it enables the camera to pick which ISO setting it thinks is best for the environment you are shooting in. What you can normally do in this function is set a maximum ISO, such as ISO 1600. This means the camera, when it is picking what ISO to use, will not be able to use anything over 1600.

While auto features are a brilliant helper, particularly if you are starting out, try not to get stuck constantly using them. That's what I hope these series of posts can do, give you the information you need to allow you to start experimenting with the settings yourself on manual.

Remember when you start playing around with any of the settings (aperture, ISO or shutter speed), you will also need to start adjusting the other settings accordingly. But that's another post for another day.
